Start with the pattern
Name each affected sink, tub or toilet and explain whether using one fixture changes another. Gurgling and recurring slow drainage are useful observations, but do not identify the exact location or cause of an obstruction. Avoid adding drain chemicals before a visit and disclose products already used.
Define the line and access
Ask whether the initial assessment covers a fixture trap, branch drain or larger line. Identify accessible cleanouts and any finished basement access restrictions. Clearing, camera inspection and replacement are separate methods with different evidence requirements; confirm which is proposed and how restored flow will be checked.
Bring the history of repeat trouble
Have prior clearing dates, recordings and repair invoices available. Ask what changed since the last visit and what evidence would justify a different method. A recurring obstruction does not by itself prove root intrusion, damaged pipe or a need to replace the sewer lateral.
Keep wastewater and public drainage separate
Wastewater indoors, a street drainage concern and a public sewer issue have different responsible parties. Avoid contact with backed-up water and stop using affected fixtures when safe. Check the wastewater authority for a public-system report; ask the business whether it handles your specific drain problem before scheduling.
Before calling, distinguish one-fixture symptoms from a shared drainage problem and describe what you observed.
Questions to ask about drain blockage assessment
- Which drain is included in the assessment?
- Is inspection separate from clearing?
- What evidence supports a pipe repair rather than another clearing?
Does the quote include everything?
Ask about assessment charges, the proposed remedy, parts, testing and work excluded from the scope. Availability and charges depend on the independent business and actual property. Compare the supplied scopes and exclusions before choosing.
