Let the utility establish the public/private repair boundary
Gahanna’s utilities guidance says the city maintains water mains and the connection to the curb box; the property owner maintains the service from curb box to building. It also distinguishes city sanitary mains from owner-maintained laterals.

Report the observed water break first
Gahanna asks residents who suspect a water break to contact its utilities team so responsibility can be assessed. Note street water, yard water and indoor symptoms separately; do not assume the nearest wet patch locates the break.
Confirm which sewer section is obstructed
For odor or suspected backup, the city’s guidance routes the concern to utilities for assessment. Carry any main-versus-lateral finding into the plumbing inquiry so the quoted clearing or repair addresses the appropriate section.
Put restoration and testing in the private scope
If the confirmed responsibility is private, ask for the assessed line segment, repair method, access, testing and restoration in writing. A utility responsibility decision does not establish a contractor’s availability or price.
Prepare the property and repair details
State Gahanna, the full address and the fixture or equipment involved. Describe whether water is still escaping, whether one or several fixtures are affected and any safe isolation already performed. If you are unsure of the source, say so rather than repeating an assumed diagnosis.
- Explain entry, parking and any building-access restrictions.
- Identify the person who may authorize repairs.
- Have prior inspection notes or equipment photographs available.
Arrange the right assessment
Call with your full address and ask whether the business handles your fixture or equipment. Confirm the visit charge and who can authorize repairs in a shared building.
