Include sewer-lateral permits and installer qualifications
Worthington says a sewer lateral, including the wye at the main, is the property owner’s responsibility. Its sewer guidance requires a Columbus-licensed sewer installer and a Worthington permit for lateral installation or repair; right-of-way excavation has an additional permit requirement.

Have a suspected public backup investigated
Use Worthington’s official sewer reporting route when a public-system backup is suspected. Record which drains are affected and keep the city’s findings for the private contractor; avoid assuming rainwater and sanitary systems are connected.
Ask what supports a replacement recommendation
A slow fixture alone does not prove a lateral needs replacement. Ask for the investigation result, exact segment, access method and whether clearing, repair and restoration are separately priced.
Check the approval boundary before digging
Verify the installer qualification and permit responsibility for the described work. If the project enters the right-of-way, ask whether that approval is included and how street, sidewalk or landscaping restoration will be handled.
Prepare the property and repair details
State Worthington, the full address and the fixture or equipment involved. Describe whether water is still escaping, whether one or several fixtures are affected and any safe isolation already performed. If you are unsure of the source, say so rather than repeating an assumed diagnosis.
- Explain entry, parking and any building-access restrictions.
- Identify the person who may authorize repairs.
- Have prior inspection notes or equipment photographs available.
Arrange the right assessment
Call with your full address and ask whether the business handles your fixture or equipment. Confirm the visit charge and who can authorize repairs in a shared building.
