A reading change records water passing the meter. Automatic appliances, irrigation and measurement differences must be considered before calling it a hidden pipe leak.

Use the same register and unit
Only compare safely accessible readings from the same register. Record the time, unit and whether any water-using equipment operated. Do not open utility equipment or force access. If the reading is unfamiliar, ask the water supplier how to interpret it.
Check automatic use as well as taps
Irrigation, appliances and fixtures can use water when nobody turns on a faucet. Note their operation. A changing reading does not establish a leak location, damaged material or an appropriate repair.
Take observations to the right party
For a billing or meter question, begin with the supplier named on the bill. For suspected household leakage, describe the observed pattern to the assessing business. The calculator below shows only a difference between supplied numbers; it estimates neither a bill nor water-loss duration.
Compare two meter readings
Read the same register before and after a period with no water use. Include irrigation, appliances and automatic equipment in that pause. The EPA suggests a two-hour comparison. Enter up to six decimal places.
